PHARMACOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS.

In small doses, Glauber’s salt irritates receptors of stomach and intestines,  increasing  secretion,  motility  and  improving digestion.  Thinning  mucus  acts  anticatarrhal.  Sulfur, which is part of Glauber’s salt under the action of bacteria and ciliates rumen of ruminants forms compounds that go the formation of sulphur-containing amino acids. After application in large doses is difficult absorbed and increases the osmotic pressure in the intestine, where accumulates  a  large  amount  of  fluid  that  dilutes  the chyme and reflectory intensifies peristalsis. Laxative effect occurs after in bowel will be 3-6% salt concentration. After application of salt with a little amount of water comes dehydration, and with it the removal of poisons, toxins, metabolic products. Laxative effect occurs within 8-14 hours.

Glauber’s salt stimulates the production of bile and biliary tract motility, accelerates excretion with bile of metabolic  products,creates  unfavorable  conditions  for  loss and formation of kidney stones. It forms insoluble salts of mercury, barium and lead. At external application in hypertonic solutions Glauber’s salt prevents resorption, delayes wound edema fluid, dead skin cells, bacteria.

APPLICATION.

Apply to horses, cattle, small ruminants, pigs, dogs, cats, fur animals, hens, geese, ducks as a laxative agent in case of colics, superalimentation, blocked intestine,  poisonings  by  various  substances,  flatulency, dehelmintization.  As  distracting  and  dehydrated  agent in case of pleurisy, peritonitis, edema, dropsy, rheumatic sore of horses hooves (with a little amount of water).

Glauber’s salt is used in case of poisonings by salts of lead, barium, mercury and other poisons with the aim of reduction of their absorption and acceleration of excretion from the intestine. Prescribe to increase appetite and  improve  digestion,  incatarrhal  inflammation  of  the stomach and intestines; as a choleretic agent in liver diseases, treatment and prevention of cholelithiasis; in coprostasia, chymostasis and contraction of the intestines. In case of hypotension and atony of proventriculus wash rumen by 1% solution.

As a laxative agent Glauber’s salt is injected from the rubber bottle or through the probe with plenty of water.

DOSAGE.

For laxative action:

  • to horses 100-250 g;
  • cattle 150-400 g; sheep, goats 20-50 g; pigs 10-25 g;
  • dogs 5-10 g; cats 5.10 g; fur animals 3-10 g; hens 1-2 g;
  • geese, ducks 5-8 g.

For  improvement  of  digestion:

  • horses  10-25  g;  cattle
  • 10-40 g; sheep, goats 2-5 g; pigs 1-3 g; dogs 0.1-0.5 g;
  • cats 5.10 g; fur animals 0.1-0.5 g; hens 0.1-0.15 g; geese,
  • ducks 0.3-0.5 g.
